There's no-one so desperate as a mum whose little one is suffering a lingering cold.  Knowing there's a sleepless night ahead with an unhappy, unwell child is every parent's nightmare.  And with children catching an average of 6-12 viruses per year there's a lot of night-time sniffles going on in the average household.

Babies and toddlers, with their underdeveloped immune systems, are often the hardest hit and there are very few medication options available.

Fortunately natural therapies are very effective and can be a life saver when illness hits.

Here's our top 6.

These gingerbread reindeer are adorable, easy, and best of all you don't need a fancy cutter - just use your gingerbread man cookie cutter & flip them upside down.  Genius.

Head lice.  For many parents it feels like a constant battle, and there's no question who's winning.

Head lice have had a long time to perfect their survival strategy, after all.   The earliest recordings of lice are from Ancient Eygpt, where they were found on mummies, and head lice combs buried in tombs.

Head lice can survive under water for several hours.  They attach themselves to your scalp with glue. They can even change their colour as camoflague depending on the colour hair they're in.  These critters are next-level battle strategists.  But you can be smarter.

Elfs on shelfs, carols Christmas Eve, family photos with Santa, visiting local Christmas light displays... it seems like every family has a special "tradition" at Christmas.

But what if you don't, really?  It's easy to feel like you're shortchanging your kids special memories, particularly seeing it all splashed across social media this time of year.

Traditions and rituals are lovely, but they're not everything.  So don't feel bad if you don't stand in shopping centre queues to sit your kids on sweaty Santa's knees, or write individual cards to every teacher.   Often they're more about the grownups than the kids, if we're being totally honest.   But if you do still want to do something - maybe a bit more low-maintenance! - here's a few fun ideas.

How adorable are these Christmas treats?  Super-easy yet impressive looking, they tick all the boxes for your next festive get-together.

125g unsalted butter
1 cup brown sugar
2 eggs

The perfect summer treat (and an impressive 'bring a plate' for any party with kids).   They're also incredibly simple!

You'll need:

  • Jelly - any flavour
  • Oranges

Method:

  1. Make up jelly according to the packet instructions. Set aside for 20 minutes to cool.
  2. Slice oranges in half and scoop out the flesh, using a small knife or spoon.
  3. Fill the orange cavities with cooled jelly. Place the orange halves, upright, on a tray.
  4. Refrigerate for 3 hours or until set.
  5. Once jelly is set, slice in half and serve.

If you have kids and haven't heard about the current SLIME obsession, you've either been under a rock or out of wifi reception!   It's a craze that's been sweeping You Tube and mums have been out of their mind searching for the 'right' PVA glue and dealing with sticky takeaway containers of goo.   But let's face it, it's Halloween, prime slime time - so let's make an exception and let our creative little ones have some fun.

The good news is, this recipe Euky Bear has discovered uses no glue (halellujah!) and no borax, which means it's relatively safe to allow without adult supervision.  And tried and tested by our very own kids.
